Delete (most) Social Media and Make a Website

November 26th, 2025

How many social media accounts and services do you have? How many of them do you actively post on and use? Does decreasing your use of those accounts sound appealing to you? Do you get a weird feeling the tech oligarchs are watching your every comment, like, and post on instagram, youtube, tiktok and the like?

Wouldn't it be pretty cool if everyone had a personal webpage instead of a bunch of fragmented social media accounts? The indieweb certainly thinks so.

Making a personal website offers so many benefits over "social media" applications.

You don't even need to have a blog or write anything on it either. Maybe your website is just a single page.

but it's missing social features

This is true. However, I think this is actually a bonus. Most of the things you interact with online are smoke and mirrors and not representative of reality. This is something most of us have a degree of awareness of. Maybe the only people who take the time to go and read your webpage are your close friends; in my opinion that's a good thing. The feeling of missing out on being social is just a hack of your need for social interaction. Most of your followers don't care or think about you anyway. In addition, the internet was intended to be used this way. If you want to see something someone has made, just go to their website. Even better than that, if you don't, don't go to their site.

but social media has some benefits

This is also true. Maybe you have a business or are a media/internet personality and marketing on social media has benefited you a lot. I would be lying if I said I didn't sometimes learn valuable things from social media. So maybe you don't need to delete all social media. Despite all of it's flaws it still has a real use for people. That being said, 90% of the services you are signed up for probably don't serve this purpose and it probably won't hurt you to just pick wisely what you decide to use and when. Living in a cabin in the woods with no phone isn't the only solution. The world wide web can feed a lot of your curiosity and desire for using the internet without requiring you to doomscroll or be manipulated by a billion dollar algorithm.

but I don't know how to code that / how do i make one

Webpages are written using a markup language called HTML. It doesn't require any fancy knowledge of programming or computers, and it's probably one of the easiest things you can do on your computer. Even a person with bad computer skills could learn to write proper HTML in less than an hour. To style the page and make it look nice, you will need CSS. CSS is might take a little bit longer to become proficient with but it is by no means necessary for making your website. My webpage doesn't use much CSS as at all. You can get a free website on neocities where a lot of other people also host their personal pages.
